Interview with Susan, creator of AllPony

When/how did you become a horsecrazy girl?

I started taking riding lessons when I was 10, although I have loved horses for as long as I can remember. I took lessons at a hunter/jumper barn and showed in local hunter shows on ponies and small horses. I owned and leased numerous horses & ponies that I showed in hunters and combined training.

I fell in love with dressage as a teenager and had the opportunity to lease a Grand Prix trained lipizzan schoolmaster. Fred was his barn name and he had just been hanging out in a field for several years and was still a stallion when I tried him.

His coat was orange from red clay stains and he had no muscle tone. We had him gelded and brought him back into work. Fred was an incredibly kind and gentle soul, and taught me so much. I showed him through third level and schooled through Prix St George over the next couple of years.

Since then I have been a working student for professional riders and have done a lot of catch riding and most recently taken on a couple of sale horses that I got back into shape and helped find homes for. I now am back to riding hunters after having two kids, and show in the Adult Amateur division.

How did you come up with the idea for your website and activity books?

I am a digital designer & fine artist, and I developed Allpony and the activity book as a way to marry my web, graphic design and fine art skills with my love of riding to teach my own children about horsemanship. It has grown from there and has become a resource for other horse-crazy kids.

Why did you create your site/activity guides?
I pulled horsemanship terminology and information from Pony Club Quiz Rally guides and my own experience, and came up with the idea for the activity book from Highlights magazines that my kids get. The imagery for the website and the activity book is created in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, and the website is built in WordPress.

Do you have horses now?
I have a 7 year old Belgian Warmblood mare that I am leasing named Kara.
